Hezbollah
Hezbollah is an Iran-backed Lebanese Shiite militant organization and political party that has waged continuous conflict against Israel since October 8, 2023. As of June 2026, the group has formally rejected US-brokered ceasefire terms, leading to a collapse of prior understandings and a significant escalation in IDF operations, including direct strikes on the group's headquarters in Beirut's Dahieh district and the exposure of massive subterranean terror infrastructure.
Hezbollah — Arabic for "Party of God" — was founded in the early 1980s with support from the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). It functions as a state-within-a-state in Lebanon, maintaining a massive rocket arsenal and a sophisticated military infrastructure. On October 8, 2023, Hezbollah began launching attacks against northern Israel in solidarity with Hamas. This led to a sustained conflict that resulted in the 2024 elimination of long-time leader Hassan Nasrallah and a subsequent IDF ground incursion into southern Lebanon.
Current Status (June 2026)
The security situation reached a critical inflection point in June 2026 following the collapse of a fragile ceasefire framework. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem publicly rejected US-brokered diplomatic efforts as "absurd and humiliating," while the organization resumed direct rocket fire on northern Israeli communities, specifically targeting the Yiftah and Dovav bases on June 7. This move was a self-admitted violation of the "Dahieh-northern communities" understandings that had previously limited the scope of mutual attacks.
In response, the IDF has intensified its operations, shifting from localized border skirmishes to strategic strikes in the heart of Beirut. On June 7 and 8, 2026, the Israeli Air Force targeted Hezbollah command headquarters in the Dahieh district. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized these operations as "dismantling Hezbollah's form," asserting that Israel would no longer accept the security equations the group attempted to impose. Simultaneously, the IDF has exposed and begun dismantling a massive, Iranian-funded tunnel network beneath the Beaufort Ridge. This facility, located six kilometers from Metula, was designed to house hundreds of operatives and served as a launch site for hundreds of rockets, underscoring the group's long-term strategic investment in subterranean warfare.
