TL;DR

US President Donald Trump told Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani during a phone call Tuesday that Doha fought alongside the US and helped Washington, adding: 'You will always be a friend for me.' The comments, reported by Israel Hayom, underline the close personal bond between the two leaders against a backdrop of ongoing Qatari mediation between the US and Iran.

01 · THE DISPATCH

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday spoke with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, telling the emir: 'You fought and helped us, you will always be a friend for me,' according to a report by Israel Hayom at 12:49 Jerusalem time.

The warm exchange comes amid an active Qatari mediation channel between Washington and Tehran. As The Zioneer previously reported, the Qatari Royal Court said last week that Trump and the emir discussed progress in understandings with Iran. A Politico report earlier this month also detailed how the emir, alongside Pakistan's army chief and the UAE president, persuaded Trump to back down from a planned strike on Iran by arguing a diplomatic deal was within reach.

The Tuesday call appears to reinforce the personal relationship between the two leaders as Qatar continues to serve as an intermediary with Iran. No official readout from either the White House or the Qatari Royal Court has been published at this time.
