United Torah Judaism informed the coalition Monday that its MKs will not take part in plenum votes today because the coalition has not advanced agreed-upon legislation, according to an official statement. The Knesset plenum is again expected to end its session early.
United Torah Judaism (UTJ) escalated its coalition pressure Monday afternoon by announcing, in an official message to the coalition leadership, that its MKs will not vote in the Knesset plenum today due to the failure to advance the package of bills agreed upon in the coalition agreements. The move follows weeks of friction over the daycare funding bill for yeshiva students, which the coalition has repeatedly failed to bring to a vote due to insufficient majority. As The Zioneer reported earlier this month, both Shas and UTJ had halted voting on coalition legislation in mid-June over the same issue (June 15), and the coalition chair informed Haredi representatives Monday morning that the daycare bill would not be voted on today (June 29). The current abstention from all plenum votes is a broader step than the targeted refusals that have occurred over the past two weeks. The Knesset plenum is once again expected to end its daily session early, as it has repeatedly done when coalition discipline falters. No other Haredi party, such as Shas, has yet announced a similar move, but the coalition's legislative capacity remains fragile.
