Har Homa

Har Homa is a prominent neighborhood located on the southeastern edge of Jerusalem, situated between the neighborhood of Ramat Rachel and the city of Bethlehem. Officially named Homat Shmuel after Shmuel Meir, a former deputy mayor of Jerusalem, the neighborhood is widely known by its geographical name, Har Homa ('Wall Mountain'). Its establishment in 1997 under the first Netanyahu government was a significant milestone in Jerusalem's urban development, aimed at maintaining a Jewish majority and providing affordable housing for young families within the municipal boundaries of the capital.

Since its founding, Har Homa has grown into a large, family-oriented community characterized by high-density stone-clad apartment buildings, numerous parks, and educational institutions. It serves as a vital residential hub for thousands of Israelis, many of whom commute to central Jerusalem or the Gush Etzion area. The neighborhood's location beyond the 1949 Armistice Line (Green Line) has historically made it a point of international diplomatic discussion; however, for Israeli authorities and the local population, it is considered an integral part of the unified city of Jerusalem.

In recent years, Har Homa has seen continued expansion, with new stages of construction (Har Homa B, C, and D) adding thousands of housing units. The neighborhood is known for its diverse population, including religious, traditional, and secular residents, contributing to the social fabric of the city. While often in the news due to planning and construction updates, the neighborhood also faces local urban challenges common to large residential districts, including infrastructure development and community safety issues. Most recently, the neighborhood appeared in local reports following a police investigation into alleged misconduct within a private childcare setting, highlighting the community's reliance on local social and educational services.
