Highway 20 (Ayalon)
Highway 20, commonly known as the Ayalon Highway, is the primary intra-metropolitan expressway in Israel, serving as the central transportation artery for the Gush Dan region and Tel Aviv.
Highway 20, or the Ayalon Highway, is the backbone of Israel's transportation infrastructure in the densely populated coastal plain. Running primarily through the bed of the Ayalon Stream, the highway connects major cities including Rishon LeZion, Holon, Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, and Herzliya. It is characterized by its multi-lane configuration and its integration with the Israel Railways coastal line, which runs between the northbound and southbound lanes.
Beyond its role as a transit corridor, the Ayalon has become a focal point of Israeli civic life. It is the most heavily trafficked road in the country, and its interchanges—most notably the Hashalom Interchange—serve as critical nodes for commerce and employment. Due to its central location and visibility, the highway frequently serves as a barometer for national activity; it is often the site of major infrastructure projects, large-scale public demonstrations, and, unfortunately, significant traffic incidents that impact the entire central region's mobility.
Maintaining the safety and flow of the Ayalon is a top priority for Israeli transport authorities. The highway's proximity to the Ayalon Stream also makes it a critical area for flood management during winter storms. As the primary link between northern and southern Israel via the center, any disruption on Highway 20 has immediate ripple effects on the national economy and security logistics. Recent events, including serious traffic accidents near the Hashalom Interchange, underscore the ongoing challenges of managing high-density transit in Israel's commercial heartland.
