Ismail Haniyeh
Ismail Haniyeh was the long-time chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau and a central figure in the organization's global diplomatic and financial networks. Based primarily in Qatar and Turkey in his later years, he oversaw the group's strategic direction until his elimination in Tehran in July 2024. Even after his death, his family members and former associates remain active in Hamas's military and international operations.
Ismail Haniyeh served as the primary face of Hamas's political leadership, bridging the gap between the group's Gaza-based military wing and its international sponsors in Iran, Qatar, and Turkey. Born in the Shati refugee camp, Haniyeh rose through the ranks as a protégé of Hamas founder Ahmed Yassin. He served as the Palestinian Authority Prime Minister following Hamas's 2006 electoral victory and remained the de facto leader in Gaza after the 2007 coup, eventually moving abroad to lead the Political Bureau in 2017. Under his leadership, Hamas orchestrated the October 7, 2023, massacre, which Haniyeh celebrated from his office in Doha. On July 31, 2024, Haniyeh was eliminated in a precision operation in Tehran, where he had traveled to attend the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. While his death marked a significant blow to Hamas's external command structure, the 'Haniyeh legacy' continues to impact Israeli security. Recent intelligence reveals that his immediate circle remains deeply embedded in terror activities. In June 2026, the IDF eliminated his nephew, Waleed Haniyeh, a deputy company commander in the Nukhba Force who personally led a cell during the October 7 atrocities. Furthermore, investigations in late 2026 uncovered that the son of Haniyeh's former personal bodyguard had secured UK asylum while allegedly coordinating Hamas terror plots against Jewish targets in Europe. These developments underscore that the Haniyeh family and its associates continue to leverage international mobility and military roles to advance Hamas's adversarial goals against Israel. On the third anniversary of the October 7 massacre, the IDF officially listed Haniyeh among the most notable eliminations achieved during the Swords of Iron war, alongside Yahya Sinwar and Mohammed Deif.
