Mawasi (Al-Mawasi) is a narrow strip of coastal land in the southern Gaza Strip, historically known for its agricultural character and sandy terrain. Since the escalation of hostilities following the October 7, 2023 massacre, the area has gained significant strategic and humanitarian importance. The IDF designated Mawasi as a 'humanitarian zone' to facilitate the evacuation of civilians from active combat zones in Gaza City, Khan Younis, and later Rafah. This designation was intended to provide a space for international aid distribution and temporary shelter, away from the primary theaters of urban warfare.

Despite its status as a humanitarian zone, Mawasi has remained a site of security interest for the IDF due to attempts by Hamas and other terror organizations to exploit the civilian presence for cover. The Zioneer Intelligence Desk has tracked multiple targeted operations within the Mawasi perimeter aimed at neutralizing high-value targets who utilize the area's dense tent camps and makeshift infrastructure. These operations are characterized by precise intelligence and surgical strikes, such as drone attacks on vehicles or specific structures, to minimize collateral damage while dismantling Hamas's remaining command and control elements.

Geographically, the area lacks permanent urban infrastructure, making the sudden influx of hundreds of thousands of displaced persons a significant logistical challenge. The reliance on Mawasi as a primary refuge underscores the complexity of the IDF's security-first approach, which seeks to balance the necessity of military operations against terror infrastructure with the protection of non-combatants. As the conflict continues, Mawasi remains a critical barometer for the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the ongoing efforts to prevent terror groups from regenerating within civilian-heavy environments.
