Recently, Meta has come under intense legal scrutiny in the United States. In August 2026, the company reached a landmark settlement agreement with 29 state attorneys general. The lawsuit alleged that Meta intentionally engineered its platforms, specifically Instagram and Facebook, to be addictive to minors, exploiting developing psychological vulnerabilities to ensure compulsive use. Furthermore, the company was accused of unlawfully harvesting the personal data of children. The settlement, reported to be between $16.68 billion and $18 billion, marks one of the largest financial penalties ever faced by a social media firm regarding youth safety. This follows other significant legal setbacks, including a $567 million judgment in New Mexico earlier the same month. These developments signal a tightening regulatory environment that may force fundamental changes in how Meta's algorithms prioritize engagement over user well-being.
