Negev

The Negev is Israel's southern desert region, comprising over 60% of the country's landmass. A critical strategic zone for national security, it houses major IDF infrastructure and serves as the nation's primary geographic depth. In mid-2026, the region has become a focal point for direct long-range missile and drone barrages from Iran and its regional proxies.

The Negev (from the Hebrew root for 'dry') is a triangular desert region in southern Israel, stretching from Be'er Sheva in the north to Eilat on the Red Sea. While it represents the vast majority of Israel's total land area, it remains sparsely populated compared to the central coastal plain. For the State of Israel, the Negev is a frontier of national resilience and strategic depth, housing critical military and national infrastructure, including the Nevatim and Ramon airbases, and the Negev Nuclear Research Center near Dimona. In recent years, the region has faced a dual challenge of internal governance and external security threats. Internally, the Negev is home to a large Bedouin population, where issues of land ownership, unrecognized villages, and civil infrastructure remain points of friction and ongoing government focus. Recent incidents, such as violence in Al-Sayyid and traffic safety concerns on Route 80 near Abu Juda, highlight the region's complex social fabric and the need for improved civil services. From a security perspective, the Negev has become a primary target for regional adversaries. On June 8, 2026, the region was a central focus of a massive multi-front barrage involving ballistic missiles and UAVs launched from Iran and Yemen. Alerts were activated in hundreds of settlements across the Central Negev, Southern Negev, and the Dead Sea area. Despite the intensity of the fire, Israeli air defenses, supported by regional allies, successfully intercepted the majority of threats, preserving the operational integrity of the region's strategic assets.
