Yanbu, Saudi Arabia

Yanbu (Yanbu al-Bahr) is one of Saudi Arabia's most significant strategic assets, located in the Al Madinah Province on the Red Sea coast. As the western terminus of the East-West Pipeline, it allows Saudi Arabia to export crude oil and natural gas liquids while bypassing the vulnerable Strait of Hormuz. This infrastructure makes the city a primary focal point for the kingdom's economic resilience and, consequently, a high-priority target for regional adversaries, particularly the Houthi movement in Yemen and their Iranian backers.

The city is divided into three distinct sectors: Yanbu al-Bahr (the historic port and residential center), Yanbu al-Nakhal (the agricultural interior), and Yanbu al-Sinaiyah (the industrial city). The latter is managed by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu and hosts massive petrochemical complexes and refineries operated by Saudi Aramco and its international partners.

In recent years, Yanbu has become a front line in the regional shadow war. Its proximity to the Red Sea maritime corridor places it within range of long-range ballistic missiles and suicide drones launched from Houthi-controlled territories in Yemen. To counter these threats, Saudi Arabia has integrated international defense cooperation into its security architecture. This includes the deployment of Greek-operated Patriot air defense batteries, a notable example of European-Saudi security alignment aimed at stabilizing global energy markets. For Israel and the broader Western alliance, the security of Yanbu is inextricably linked to the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and the containment of Iranian-aligned proxy influence across the Arabian Peninsula. As the kingdom pursues its Vision 2030 goals, Yanbu is also slated for significant expansion as a logistics and tourism hub, further raising the stakes for its continued protection.
