The Lead
An estimated 100,000 Israelis gathered at the Western Wall in Jerusalem on Saturday evening, the eve of Yom Kippur, to pray for the release of hostages still held by terror organizations in the Gaza Strip.
The Western Wall plaza was filled to capacity on Saturday night as tens of thousands of worshippers arrived for the traditional Selichot prayers on the eve of the Day of Atonement. This year, the solemn gathering was marked by a profound focus on the 101 hostages remaining in Gaza, with families and former captives leading the call for their return.
Among those present were Elkana Bohbot and Rom Breslavsky, both of whom were previously held captive by Hamas. Their presence served as a powerful reminder of the national trauma and the ongoing hope for further releases. Breslavsky, who was taken from the Nova music festival, shared a deeply personal reflection on his journey from captivity to the holy site.
A Prayer of Gratitude and Regret
In a message shared during the event, Rom Breslavsky expressed a mixture of survivor's guilt and religious awakening. "A year ago, last Yom Kippur, I was a prisoner of Zion in Deir al-Balah. Today I am free at the Western Wall," he stated. Breslavsky asked for forgiveness for "not doing more" during the October 7 massacre and for the moments of doubt he experienced while in the hands of terrorists. He concluded with a prayer of thanks to God for his redemption from the "house of slaves."
National Resilience
The gathering reflects a recurring theme of national unity at the Western Wall during times of crisis. As The Zioneer has previously reported, the site remains the focal point for Jewish national and spiritual identity, frequently drawing hundreds of thousands for major fasts and days of remembrance. The presence of families whose loved ones are still in Gaza underscored the principle of mutual responsibility that continues to define the Israeli home front nearly a year into the conflict. The Zioneer will continue to follow updates regarding the status of the hostages and national efforts for their return.
