The Lead
Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, commander of the 401st Armored Brigade's 52nd Battalion, was killed overnight Friday in southern Lebanon alongside three of his soldiers. The incident occurred at approximately 00:20 near the village of Tebnine, north of Beaufort Castle, when their command tank was struck by a Hezbollah munition. Ben Simhon is the fourth commander of the 52nd Battalion to be killed or wounded in combat since the start of the war on October 7.
The IDF has cleared for publication the name of Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, 32, from Kibbutz Beit HaShita, who fell in battle in southern Lebanon. Ben Simhon, a father of two, had assumed command of the 52nd Battalion only in April 2026, after his predecessor was severely wounded. Three additional soldiers from the battalion were killed in the same strike; their names are being withheld pending final notification of their families.
The Incident at Tebnine
According to preliminary military findings, the command tank was operating under the Givati Brigade Combat Team in the Tebnine area when it was hit by a "suspicious target." While initial reports suggested a Hezbollah anti-tank missile, the IDF is currently investigating whether the strike was carried out by an explosive drone. Following the incident, the IDF launched extensive retaliatory strikes against Hezbollah infrastructure in Nabatieh and surrounding areas.
A Battalion Under Fire
The 52nd Battalion has seen an unprecedented turnover of leadership due to combat casualties since October 2024. Ben Simhon is the fourth commander of the unit to be hit:
* Lt. Col. Daniel Ella was wounded in Rafah in July 2024.
* Lt. Col. Yehuda Shalev was severely wounded in Jabalia in October 2024, in the same incident that claimed the life of 401st Brigade Commander Col. Ahsan Daksa.
* Lt. Col. A, Ben Simhon's immediate predecessor, was severely wounded in Bint Jbeil in April 2026.
Analysis and Outlook
The loss of a fourth battalion commander underscores the intensity of the friction in the southern Lebanon security zone, even amid reports of a diplomatic pause. Military analysts note that Hezbollah has continued to utilize anti-tank missiles and FPV drones against IDF armored positions despite Israeli efforts to degrade their capabilities. The 401st Armored Brigade has been at the forefront of these operations, sustaining significant losses among its senior command tier, including two brigade commanders hit in the past year. The IDF continues to investigate the specific tactical failure that allowed the strike on the command vehicle.
