The IDF and ISA (Shin Bet) confirmed on Monday the elimination of Sabai Zaher Abd al-Hamid Abu Hasna, a Hamas Nukhba terrorist who participated in the October 7 massacre and was directly involved in holding Israeli hostage Omer Shem Tov in captivity. Abu Hasna was killed in a precision airstrike in the northern Gaza Strip over the weekend.
The joint operation by the IDF and ISA targeted Abu Hasna, a member of Hamas’s military wing who had been active throughout the war in planting explosive devices and planning attacks against Israeli forces. According to military statements, Abu Hasna was a key figure in the captivity of Omer Shem Tov and gained notoriety for his appearance in a Hamas-produced video of Shem Tov’s release, a ceremony described by Israeli officials as a psychological warfare tactic where the hostage was forced to interact with his captors.
Operational Context and Additional Targets
The strike that eliminated Abu Hasna also resulted in the death of Ahmed Samir Muhammad Washah. The IDF identified Washah as a Hamas military operative who simultaneously served as a photojournalist for the Al Jazeera network and as a sniper for the terror organization. In a separate engagement in northern Gaza, Israeli forces eliminated three additional armed Hamas operatives who were reportedly preparing attacks against IDF troops operating in the area.
Security and Humanitarian Measures
The IDF emphasized that prior to the strikes, several steps were taken to mitigate harm to non-combatants, including the use of precise munitions and continuous aerial surveillance. Military officials stated that Southern Command remains deployed in the region in accordance with existing operational agreements and will continue to act against immediate threats. The elimination of Abu Hasna marks another step in the Israeli security establishment's effort to reach all individuals involved in the October 7 atrocities and the subsequent holding of hostages.
