The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) intensified its operations across Lebanon on Friday, striking over 150 Hezbollah targets since midnight in response to a lethal ambush that killed four Israeli soldiers. The escalation, which included strikes on command centers and rocket infrastructure in Nabatieh and the Beqaa Valley, follows the death of Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, commander of the 52nd Battalion, and three of his crew members in a suspected anti-tank or drone attack in the village of Kfar Tebnit.
The IDF confirmed Friday evening that it has struck more than 150 Hezbollah targets across Lebanon since the start of the day. The military reported that the strikes targeted command centers, rocket launchers, and terror infrastructure, specifically in the Nabatieh area and the Beqaa Valley. According to the military, dozens of Hezbollah operatives were eliminated during these operations, which were characterized as a response to repeated violations of the ceasefire by the terror group.
The Ambush in Kfar Tebnit
The massive wave of strikes followed a severe security incident shortly after midnight in the southern Lebanon village of Kfar Tebnit. A tank belonging to the 401st Armored Brigade’s 52nd Battalion was struck by what is suspected to be either an anti-tank missile or a drone. The explosion killed all four crew members, including the battalion commander, 32-year-old Lt. Col. Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon from Beit HaShita. Ben Simhon had recently replaced the previous commander, who was severely wounded in southern Lebanon in April. The IDF is currently investigating the exact cause of the explosion.
Security Zone and Operational Freedom
Defense Minister Israel Katz stated on Friday that the IDF will remain in the southern Lebanon security zone to protect northern Israeli communities and thwart emerging threats. "Every violation of the ceasefire by Hezbollah will be met with great force," Katz said, emphasizing that troops will continue to operate from the coastline to the heights of Beaufort. IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin added that Israeli forces maintain "full freedom of action" to remove threats, noting that troops are currently working to demolish major Hezbollah tunnel systems at the Beaufort Castle area and Ali Taher ridge, which serve as central command centers for the organization.
Strategic Outlook
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed he directed the military to strike Hezbollah forcefully following the ambush. The IDF maintains that Hezbollah is fighting a defensive battle to prevent the completion of the destruction of its infrastructure, which was built over several years. As the military continues to operate both above and below ground, the focus remains on neutralizing Hezbollah's ability to launch further attacks against Israeli forces and civilians, effectively treating any kinetic action by the group as a collapse of the prior truce terms.
