The Lead
New aviation analysis released Wednesday evening reveals the extreme physical stress placed on Flydubai flight FZ1073 during an attempted hijacking, with the aircraft plunging approximately 18,400 feet in less than two minutes. The Boeing 737-800 is estimated to have reached speeds exceeding 1,000 km/h during the dive, significantly surpassing its designed operating limits.
Extreme Descent and Velocity
According to an analysis by Osintechnical, cited by Israel Hayom correspondent Ariel Kahana, the aircraft involved in Wednesday's security incident underwent a traumatic descent that tested its structural integrity. The data indicates that the Boeing 737-800 dove 18,400 feet (approximately 5.6 kilometers) in under two minutes. During this plunge, the aircraft reportedly exceeded its maximum operating speed (VMO) by nearly 100 knots, reaching an estimated ground speed of over 1,000 km/h.
This new analysis sharpens the picture of the struggle that occurred at 08:22 Jerusalem time. As The Zioneer reported earlier, initial telemetry showed a drop of 4,305 meters in just 29 seconds. The updated figures suggest the total dive was even more extensive, occurring while passengers and crew fought to regain control of the cockpit from the Omani co-pilot.
Structural Trauma
Images of the aircraft's tail section and rudder reviewed by analysts show visible damage, suggesting the plane underwent significant aerodynamic stress. Ariel Kahana noted that the survival of the aircraft under these conditions—exceeding 1,000 km/h during a steep dive—is considered remarkable by aviation experts. The flight eventually made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where passengers were later met by a rescue flight to return them to Tel Aviv.
Security Context
The technical data supports the characterization of the event by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz as a terrorist attack. The investigation, led by the Mossad, focuses on the co-pilot's attempt to crash the aircraft after stabbing the captain. While Flydubai has called for parties to avoid speculation, the flight data confirms a near-catastrophic loss of altitude and control before the intervention of Israeli passengers. The Zioneer will continue to follow the investigation into the motives behind the attack.
