Balad chairman Sami Abu Shehadeh told the Central Elections Committee on Wednesday that he did not support armed struggle, during hearings on petitions to disqualify him from the 26th Knesset elections. The statement was made in direct response to committee questioning.
This denial follows a public statement Tuesday by Abu Shehadeh via Channel 12 News, in which he condemned the October 7 massacre and denied supporting Hamas' armed struggle, saying his earlier article 'should not have been written.' Earlier Tuesday, Channel 14 published video footage it said showed Abu Shehadeh expressing pride in Hamas terrorists two days after the attack. Abu Shehadeh has previously claimed his early remarks were mistranslated, and his attorney Yosef Jabarin argued at the committee that there is insufficient evidence to disqualify him.
The committee has not yet announced a decision. Multiple disqualification requests have been filed by right-wing factions and activists.
