AI firm Anthropic says the US government has removed the restriction it imposed on the Fable 5 model, which will be available to users as of tomorrow. The model reportedly demonstrated significant cybersecurity capabilities.
Anthropic announced on Wednesday that the U.S. government has lifted the restriction on its Fable 5 AI model, clearing the way for it to be available to users as of tomorrow. The company's statement, which did not address the status of the separately restricted Mythos 5 model, comes after a rapid sequence of developments The Zioneer has tracked since Wednesday morning.
At 02:13 Jerusalem on Wednesday, The Zioneer reported Politico's initial account that the restrictions would be lifted, followed within the same hour by Anthropic's confirmation that export controls on both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 had been reversed. Subsequent bulletins at 02:13 and 07:04 Jerusalem cited the U.S. Commerce Department as saying a national security review had found its initial June 12 directive to be flawed and ordered the rollback. What was first a single news outlet's report had, by mid-morning, been corroborated by the company and the department on the record.
As The Zioneer previously reported (June 13-14), the models were originally suspended over concerns of potential access by China, with the White House barring foreign governments, companies, and individuals—including foreign nationals inside the U.S.—from using Fable 5 and Mythos 5. The June 12 order, described at the time as an unprecedented directive against a flagship frontier AI model, followed reports that Amazon's CEO had discussed the matter with U.S. officials.
It remains unclear whether the restriction on Mythos 5 has also been lifted; Anthropic's statement on Wednesday addressed only Fable 5's availability. The company has not detailed the timeline for restoring access beyond stating it will be available tomorrow.
