MK Boaz Bismut, chair of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, said the IDF Chief of Staff's letter on the temporary order freezing criminal proceedings against yeshiva students was sent only after the committee had concluded its discussions and vote, despite the IDF having three weeks to respond, according to a report by N12. Bismut questioned why the letter was not sent earlier.
MK Boaz Bismut, chair of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee, said Monday evening that the IDF's letter on the temporary order freezing criminal proceedings against yeshiva students was sent only after the committee had concluded its discussions and vote. Bismut noted that the IDF had three weeks to submit its comments but chose to send the letter only after the fact, according to a report by N12.
The remark follows Bismut's earlier release of the full text of his letter to Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, as The Zioneer reported at 18:03. In that letter, Bismut similarly questioned the timing and noted that the IDF had participated in all committee discussions without raising objections.
The committee has been debating the controversial bill, which would freeze arrests of Haredi yeshiva students who evade military service. The bill has drawn sharp opposition from the IDF and defense establishment.
