Military Career and Strategic Background

Eyal Zamir was born in Eilat in 1966. His military path is rooted in the Armored Corps, where he commanded the 7th Armored Brigade and the 36th Division. His career is marked by a unique blend of operational command and high-level political-military coordination, having served as the Military Secretary to the Prime Minister and later as the Commander of the Southern Command. Between 2018 and 2021, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff, followed by a civilian tenure as Director-General of the Ministry of Defense (2023–2025). He is widely regarded as a key strategist who has reshaped Israel's military doctrine regarding the Iranian threat.

Leadership During Multi-Front Conflict

Since assuming the role of Chief of Staff in March 2025, Zamir has managed the IDF's transition through the most demanding operational environment in decades. In June 2026, his leadership was tested by a simultaneous escalation across four fronts. Following a direct Iranian ballistic missile attack on June 7, 2026, Zamir shifted the IDF from a defensive posture to a proactive operational stance, approving plans to challenge the Iranian attempt to establish a new 'equation' of deterrence.

Operational Management and Recent Events

On June 7 and 8, 2026, Zamir maintained an intensive operational tempo. While touring the Gaza Strip to assess the progress of Hamas's demilitarization—where he vowed that the IDF would not concede on total disarmament—he simultaneously directed the response to a rolling terror attack in the Sharon region. He conducted an on-site investigation of the Sharon attack alongside Central Command chief Avi Bluth. By the night of June 8, Zamir was reported in the Air Force war room alongside Maj. Gen. Omer Tishler, managing high-alert security events following renewed Iranian threats of 'surprises.' His tenure is increasingly defined by the need to balance high-intensity urban warfare in Gaza with the strategic necessity of a decisive military resolution in Lebanon.
