Samaria
Samaria, or Shomron, is a central highland region of the Land of Israel, historically significant as the heartland of the northern Kingdom of Israel and currently a vital strategic and residential area for the State of Israel.
Samaria (Shomron) constitutes the northern part of the central mountain ridge of the Land of Israel. Bordered by Judea to the south and the Galilee to the north, the region is characterized by its rugged topography and deep historical roots, having served as the capital of the northern Kingdom of Israel. In modern administrative terms, it forms a major part of the Judea and Samaria Area, housing hundreds of thousands of Israeli citizens alongside a significant Palestinian population. The region's strategic importance is derived from its elevation, which overlooks Israel's narrow coastal plain and the Gush Dan metropolitan area.
In June 2026, Samaria emerged as a primary target in a direct escalation from the Iranian regime. During 'Operation True Promise 5' and the subsequent 'Nasr' (Victory) operation, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched multiple ballistic missile salvos toward the region. While the IDF's multi-layered aerial defense systems intercepted the majority of the threats, structural damage was recorded in several Samaria communities on June 8, 2026, due to falling interception debris. This development marks a shift in Iranian targeting, placing the central highlands on par with traditional targets in the north and center of the country.
Simultaneously, the region faces persistent internal security challenges. A surge in 'arson terror' has been documented, where agricultural lands and grazing areas near Jewish communities are systematically targeted during the summer heat. Security forces, including the regional territorial brigades, are actively engaged in counter-terror operations to mitigate these threats. Additionally, the region remains a focal point for multi-scene terror attacks, such as the June 2026 shooting spree that reached the community of Salfit. Despite these pressures, the Israeli communities in Samaria continue to demonstrate national resilience, maintaining civilian life under the shadow of regional escalation.
