01 · THE DISPATCH

Border Police and Jerusalem district police carried out a large-scale overnight operation in the Beit Safafa neighborhood of Jerusalem, arresting 74 illegal residents and two suspects accused of housing them, police said Wednesday.

Beit Safafa, a neighborhood in southern Jerusalem bisected by the Green Line, has been a focus of law enforcement operations targeting illegal residency in recent years. The sweep follows a pattern of similar broad operations by the Border Police in Jerusalem and elsewhere: last week, forces arrested seven illegal residents in Beit Hanina (The Zioneer, June 7), and earlier this month intercepted a smuggling attempt of eight illegal residents concealed in a commercial vehicle (The Zioneer, June 9).

The number of arrests — 74 — marks one of the largest single sweeps for illegal residents reported in Jerusalem this year. Police provided no further details on the identities of the detainees or the two employers. The operation was performed by Border Police fighters and Jerusalem district police officers, police said.
