The bill to freeze arrests of yeshiva students who evade military service has reached the decisive plenum vote, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Security Committee chair MK Boaz Bismut said. Opposition leader MK Meirav Ben Ari opposed the bill. Voting is scheduled for 9:00 AM Tuesday.
The Knesset plenum is set to hold the final vote on the Charedi detention freeze bill Tuesday morning, after the measure advanced through committee. Committee chair MK Boaz Bismut said the bill aims to 'stop the terrible slide of arresting Torah scholars during the election period and shortly after, in the hope that the next government will succeed in passing the conscription law.'
Opposition leader MK Meirav Ben Ari objected, stating: 'We will continue to pay the price for this country that we love and fight for — we do not have the privilege of giving up on the soldiers.'
The bill has been a flashpoint in Israeli politics for weeks. The Chief of Staff warned that the legislation would strip the IDF of detention authority. Opposition party leaders issued a joint call against the bill on Monday evening, and opposition MKs had submitted over 100 reservations during committee votes. The plenum vote is scheduled for 9:00 AM, under coalition-opposition agreements.
