TL;DR

Coalition Chairman Ofir Katz told the Knesset Committee on Wednesday that Likud may submit reservations to the wording of the Basic Law: Torah Study, according to N12. Katz's statement signals that the bill could collapse if Haredi parties do not compromise on the text.

01 · THE DISPATCH

Coalition Chairman MK Ofir Katz (Likud) told the Knesset Committee on Wednesday that Likud may submit reservations to the wording of the Basic Law: Torah Study, according to N12's Daphna Liel. Katz said: "Even we in Likud will consider submitting reservations." The implication, per Liel, is that if the Haredi parties do not compromise on the text, the bill could collapse.

The Basic Law: Torah Study has been a contentious issue within the coalition. The Zioneer previously reported that the Knesset Committee was considering alternative wording on Tuesday, and that several coalition MKs have announced opposition to the bill. The law aims to enshrine exemptions from military service for yeshiva students. The coalition is racing to pass the legislation before the election recess.

It remains unclear whether Haredi parties will agree to changes to the text. Further votes in the committee and plenum are expected in the coming days.
