Shas newspaper warns Likud: breach of Torah Study Law agreement would be 'ingratitude'

Primary source Internal intake · 1 reviewed intake signal · Desk window 07:11

TL;DR

Shas's newspaper Derch sharply criticizes Likud for attempting to retreat from agreements on the Torah Study Basic Law, warning that such a breach would be ingratitude toward the most loyal partners and undermine the faith-based bloc. Separately, Degel HaTorah's Yated Ne'eman reports that the party may block coalition legislation if changes are made to the law's wording.

01 · THE DISPATCH

The Haredi newspapers Yated Ne'eman (Degel HaTorah) and Derch (Shas) have published fresh warnings against any changes to the Torah Study Basic Law, as The Zioneer reported at 07:04 Jerusalem. Yated Ne'eman states that Degel HaTorah may block all coalition legislation if the text is altered, while Shas's Derch accuses Likud of attempting to retreat from prior agreements, warning that such a breach would be 'ingratitude.' These statements come as the coalition standoff over the legislation continues.

The Zioneer first reported on the Haredi parties' threats Wednesday evening at 21:05 Jerusalem, when Shas's party statement warned of 'ingratitude' (version 1). At the same time, the Shas newspaper Derch published its own criticism (version 2), and by 21:05, the Degel HaTorah newspaper Yated Ne'eman had also reported that the party may block coalition legislation (version 3). The source quality evolved from a single party statement to corroboration by both Haredi newspapers.

The warnings follow earlier reports that Coalition Chairman Ofir Katz said Likud may submit reservations to the law's wording, as The Zioneer reported at 11:23 Jerusalem on Wednesday. The Haredi parties have previously issued ultimatums to Prime Minister Netanyahu, threatening to dissolve the Knesset if the law does not pass as agreed, as reported on June 23. Opposition leaders have also condemned the legislation.

It is not yet clear whether Likud will formally submit reservations or whether the Haredi parties will follow through on their threats to block legislation. The wording of the law remains under negotiation.
