The coalition is advancing a package of contentious bills ahead of the Knesset's dissolution for elections, including the October 7 political commission of inquiry, the Basic Law: Torah Study, and a bill to split the Attorney General's role, according to a Times of Israel report. The push follows earlier approvals of the Torah Study Basic Law in committee and the first Knesset reading of the October 7 inquiry bill.
Times of Israel reported Monday that the coalition is pressing ahead with a trio of high-profile legislative initiatives — the October 7 political commission of inquiry, the Basic Law: Torah Study, and a bill to split the Attorney General's role — as the Knesset heads toward dissolution for elections.
The October 7 political inquiry bill reached its first reading in the Knesset plenum earlier Monday, as The Zioneer reported at 09:08 Jerusalem. That first reading ensures the bill carries over to the next Knesset term even if the current Knesset dissolves. The Basic Law: Torah Study was approved by the Knesset Committee on June 30 (as The Zioneer reported at 15:22 Jerusalem that day) and is now set for plenum votes. The Attorney General split bill, part of the broader judicial overhaul, had previously been reported by The Zioneer on June 10 as part of a coalition legislative blitz.
The push follows weeks of coalition maneuvering. On June 25, N12's Dafna Liel reported that a deal between Prime Minister Netanyahu and Haredi parties on the Torah Study Basic Law was advancing. By June 30, the Knesset Committee approved the bill, with coalition sources telling C14 it would pass. The coalition also agreed on June 16 to advance the Torah Study Basic Law alongside a freeze on arrests of draft-dodging yeshiva students, with both passing through three readings before the Knesset disperses. Internal coalition opposition to the pre-election legislative blitz was reported by a Hebrew-language media outlet on July 4.
What remains open is whether all three bills will secure the necessary votes before the Knesset dissolves, particularly given internal coalition resistance and opposition from the opposition and some coalition members.
