TL;DR

Four former Israel Police commissioners — Ronny Alsheich, Shlomo Aharonishki, Moshe Karadi, and Rafi Peled — together with 23 senior ex-officers and civil society organizations petitioned the High Court of Justice against the recently passed amendment to the law governing the Police Internal Investigations Department (Mahash), Israeli media report. The petitioners argue the law undermines Mahash's independence.

01 · THE DISPATCH

A group of 23 former senior police officers — including four former commissioners — together with the civil society groups Academia for a Democratic Israel and the Basha'ar organization, petitioned the High Court of Justice on Tuesday against the recently approved amendment to the law governing the Police Internal Investigations Department (Mahash). The petition was first reported by Channel 12.

As The Zioneer reported, the Movement for Quality Government filed a separate petition earlier the same day. The new petition expands the legal challenge: the four former commissioners — Ronny Alsheich, Shlomo Aharonishki, Moshe Karadi, and Rafi Peled — bring the weight of the institution's past leadership into the court battle. The petitioners argue the amendment subordinates Mahash to political control and harms its independence.

The law, passed by the Knesset hours before the first petition, has drawn wide criticism from legal officials and former police brass concerned about the politicization of internal police investigations.
