Yossi Asraf, head of the Givat Ze'ev local council in Judea and Samaria, was detained Monday morning by Lahav 433's National Fraud Investigation Unit (YAHA) on suspicion of public corruption, Israeli police said. The investigation, which began covertly based on intelligence received by the unit, transitioned to an open phase Monday. Police said searches were underway at the council, at homes, and at several sites within the council's area. Senior officials from the local authority were also summoned for questioning.
A previous investigation into Asraf's assets and alleged building irregularities was reported by local media, and an opposition council member filed complaints against him. The police statement listed the Civil Administration, the Tax Authority, the Israel Electric Corporation, the Civil Prosecution, the Land Enforcement Authority, and others as partner agencies in the enforcement operation, each acting within its jurisdiction.
The investigation is in its early stages, police said, with further actions expected.
