The government decided Sunday night not to comply with a High Court of Justice ruling, according to a Channel 14 report. Commentator Itamar Fleishman defended the move, arguing that no democratic body must obey the court 100% of the time.
The government has decided not to abide by a High Court of Justice ruling, a Channel 14 report says — the latest escalation in the ongoing confrontation between the executive and the judiciary. The decision was reported by journalist Yinon Magal.
In a subsequent statement, commentator Itamar Fleishman defended the move, saying: "There is no body in a democracy that must obey [the High Court] 100% of the time. Whoever claims otherwise is a fascist." He added that if the court violates the law and the order, "we will have to disobey."
As The Zioneer reported earlier Sunday, the government had informed the High Court that it would not recognize rulings contradicting the law. The decision drew sharp condemnation from opposition leaders and former officials, including Ehud Barak, who called it a "declaration of war." Government Secretary Yossi Fuchs later denied calling for defiance of the court. The current report appears to confirm the government's noncompliance.
