A drainage system malfunction in Haifa discharged sewage into the sea during the night between Saturday and Sunday, with sewage flowing by Sunday morning, according to N12 reporter Sharon Kanovlich. The Haifa Municipality said it is investigating the incident. The disclosure comes shortly after the municipality announced the closure of five beaches for swimming on Monday morning due to water quality test failures.
Earlier today at 09:30 Jerusalem, The Zioneer reported that the Municipality closed five beaches — Studentim, Dado, Dado Center, Zamir, and Bat Galim — after water quality tests showed irregularities. Initial reports from ynet said all city beaches were closed, but within the same hour the municipality specified the five beaches. A follow-up sampling test is scheduled for today.
The Zioneer has previously reported on other environmental incidents in the Haifa area, including a diesel fuel spill at the Haifa oil refinery complex on June 23 and a diesel spill at the Kinneret's Lido beach on June 17. The municipality has not publicly linked the sewage discharge to the beach closures.
The cause of the water quality test failures that led to the beach closures has not been determined, and it remains unclear whether the sewage discharge is related. Results of the follow-up sampling are pending.
