01 · THE DISPATCH

The IDF has released the name of Capt. David Hazutt, 21, a Golani Brigade platoon commander from Ashkelon, as the soldier killed in an overnight clash in southern Lebanon. According to military details published Sunday afternoon, Golani reconnaissance troops entered a building in the village of Deir Siryan during a search operation. A Hezbollah terrorist hiding on the stairwell opened fire at close range, killing Hazutt and lightly wounding another soldier before escaping. The IDF confirmed that the terrorist has not yet been eliminated and that a pursuit is ongoing. However, an earlier bulletin at 12:58 Jerusalem quoted the IDF as stating the operative was eliminated; The Zioneer is seeking clarification on the discrepancy. As The Zioneer reported earlier Sunday, National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir mourned Hazutt, and the IDF confirmed a second soldier was lightly wounded in the same incident. The killing is the latest in a series of casualties in the northern theater. In the past week, the IDF announced the death of five soldiers in a tank incident near the Litani area on Thursday-Friday, and a Maglan commando was killed on Saturday. Hazutt's death brings the IDF toll in southern Lebanon to at least eight since Thursday. The IDF has not yet clarified the status of the terrorist, and conflicting reports remain unresolved.
