The suspect, a veteran of a classified IDF unit in both mandatory and reserve service, faces charges of "contact with a foreign agent and attempted delivery of information for the benefit of the enemy." According to the joint statement, he was in contact with an individual who identified himself as an Iranian intelligence agent, and was asked at one stage to assist in recruiting another soldier to establish contact with the handler. The nature of the information passed was not disclosed.
This case is the latest in a series of Iranian espionage attempts targeting Israeli citizens with access to sensitive security positions.
