Northern District police reported Monday that indictments were filed against a Gaza resident (35) who was illegally residing in Israel and the driver who transported him, a Nazareth resident (30). The pair were arrested on July 10 on Route 73 near Kfar Baruch junction after a traffic stop for a broken headlight. Officers smelled marijuana from the driver's seat and discovered suspected drugs in the door. The passenger initially claimed to be an Israeli citizen but later admitted he was a Gaza resident without permits.
The operation highlights ongoing police efforts to combat illegal residency and drug offenses. The Zioneer has previously reported on similar arrests: on July 15, two illegal residents from Judea and Samaria and a Jerusalem driver were arrested at a checkpoint with forged IDs; and on June 17, a Khan Younis resident was arrested after a foot chase in the north. The Nazareth prosecution unit filed the indictments, and the driver is expected to face charges for transporting an illegal resident.
