Israeli consulate employees in New York were evacuated from a nearby building due to a risk of a structure collapsing, according to reports. Details of the potential collapse are not yet available.
At 19:26 Jerusalem, a new report confirmed that the evacuation of the Israeli consulate in New York was prompted by a fear of a nearby building collapse, following a sequence of events earlier Tuesday evening.
The Zioneer initially reported at 18:06 Jerusalem that a partial building front collapsed in Manhattan during construction work, with no injuries. At 18:57, employees of the Israeli mission to the UN were evacuated safely. At 19:01, The Zioneer published a rapid series of updates: first, concerns of a possible tower collapse; then, reports that structural columns buckled inside the building; subsequently, confirmation that the consulate was evacuated due to the risk of a nearby building collapse; and finally, Consul General Ofir Akunis said he was examining alternatives to resume operations as quickly as possible.
As The Zioneer reported, the earlier partial collapse occurred at a construction site, leading to street closures and an investigation. The consulate and UN mission are located in the vicinity of the affected building.
No casualties have been reported in connection with either the partial collapse or the evacuation. The cause of the structural failure remains under investigation. Consulate operations are suspended while Akunis reviews alternatives.
