TL;DR

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar said the IAEA Board of Governors voted Wednesday on a resolution highlighting Iran's clear violation of its NPT obligations, and that referring the matter to the UN Security Council is 'necessary and long overdue.' The comments follow the IAEA board's discussion of a U.S.-backed resolution on Iranian compliance.

01 · THE DISPATCH

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar on Wednesday welcomed the IAEA Board of Governors' vote on a resolution underscoring Iran's non-compliance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). In a statement, Sa'ar said Iran's refusal to cooperate, grant access, and address its violations cannot continue, and called for the matter to be referred to the UN Security Council — a step he described as 'necessary and long overdue.' The IAEA board vote follows days of diplomatic activity. As The Zioneer reported on June 7, the U.S. had initially sought a resolution that included a Security Council referral clause, but the three European JCPOA signatories — Britain, France, and Germany — opposed the move, arguing it was 'not the right time.' The resolution that passed Wednesday does not include an automatic referral. Iran's mission to the IAEA, which called an earlier board resolution 'political and unprofessional,' has not yet responded publicly to Wednesday's vote. The push for greater transparency at Iran's nuclear sites comes after military strikes on its nuclear infrastructure; the IAEA chief this week demanded Iran disclose its remaining enriched uranium stockpile, and Iran has accused the US and Israel of striking its civilian nuclear facilities.
