TL;DR

Journalist Beni Ashkenazi reports that the Knesset's debates on the Basic Law: Torah Study, originally scheduled for Thursday, have been postponed to Sunday. The same applies to the discussions on canceling the kashrut reform, set for Sunday at 09:30, with the email notifying lawmakers sent only at 23:30 Thursday night, according to Ashkenazi.

01 · THE DISPATCH

Journalist Beni Ashkenazi reported this morning that the Knesset's scheduled debates on the Basic Law: Torah Study have been moved from Thursday to Sunday. In addition, the committee hearings on canceling the kashrut reform — promoted by the Shas party — are also set for Sunday at 09:30. The email notification to lawmakers was sent only at 23:30 Thursday night, according to Ashkenazi.

The postponement comes a day after The Zioneer reported (Thu June 25, 17:42 Jerusalem) that the Knesset Committee planned four debates on the bill for next week, and that the Knesset Legal Adviser, Attorney Sagit Afik, had warned the committee chair that the legislative process must maintain a "particularly high" standard of propriety — adding that even that would "not heal the defect" of moving the bill from the Constitution Committee. The last-minute shift to Sunday effectively condenses that timetable.

The kashrut reform debate, originally noted on the Knesset agenda for Monday June 8 according to The Zioneer's background coverage, now joins Sunday's schedule. The Torah Study bill itself was approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation on June 9, with Haredi parties at the time calling the version merely declarative for lacking a clause equating Torah study with IDF service; subsequent negotiations were reported (Tue June 9, 13:46 Jerusalem, and later on June 9 and June 21 by The Zioneer).

It remains unclear whether the simultaneous scheduling of the two debates on Sunday signals an accelerated legislative push or reflects procedural constraints. The legal adviser's earlier warning about procedural propriety has not been publicly addressed by the committee chair.
