The development follows events reported earlier Monday at 16:08 Jerusalem. The Tel Aviv District Court rejected a petition by MK Afif Abed and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against the Likud party court's ban on sitting MKs running in district primary races. The ban forces over 30 current lawmakers to compete for 18 national-list spots in the August 17 primaries. Shortly after the ruling, Abed announced he would appeal to the Supreme Court.
As The Zioneer reported in its analysis, the District Court's decision reflected judicial restraint and respect for the Likud's internal autonomous processes. During the hearing, Likud attorney Ilan Bombach described the party court's original ruling as "excessive judicial activism." The court nonetheless upheld the ban.
The internal dispute centers on whether district slots, often seen as a more accessible path to a realistic seat, should be reserved for new candidates or remain open to incumbents. The Supreme Court has not yet received the appeal, and Gotliv's statement does not alter the legal course. It remains to be seen whether the appeal will be filed and how the court will rule.
