The move, expected since she was placed second on the Otzma Yehudit list, clears the way for Minister Gila Gamliel to take the Likud seat — a position she narrowly contested in the primary vote.
The Zioneer first reported on July 6 that National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir had offered Gotliv a spot on the Otzma Yehudit slate. Over the following weeks, Gotliv's placement was negotiated: on September 1, a report indicated she would be placed fourth, then later that day she was promoted to second. Minister Yitzhak Vasserlauf vacated the second slot for her, moving to third. By the evening of September 1, Gotliv officially joined Otzma Yehudit, telling Channel 14 she 'did not feel at home' in Likud. Ben Gvir declared she 'must be in the cabinet.'
The 25th slot on the Likud list, now allocated to Gamliel, was the subject of a very close contest between Gamliel and Etty Atia during the primaries, as The Zioneer reported on August 18. Gamliel, a cabinet minister who previously praised Prime Minister Netanyahu as a 'once-in-a-generation leader' (The Zioneer, August 10), now secures a realistic Knesset position.
Gotliv's formal resignation from Likud is now complete. It remains to be seen whether she will be appointed to a cabinet position as Ben Gvir suggested, and how the reshuffled Likud slate will affect the party's election campaign.
