TL;DR

Coalition MK Mati Tuchfeld described the High Court of Justice's intervention in the state comptroller election as an 'unprecedentedly lunatic event,' saying the court should have dismissed the petitioners outright. Tuchfeld warned the ruling raises questions about future Knesset elections, according to reporting by Amit Segal (N12) and Mati Tuchfeld.

01 · THE DISPATCH

MK Mati Tuchfeld (Likud) sharply criticized the High Court of Justice on Thursday for its involvement in the Knesset's election of the State Comptroller, calling the intervention 'an event whose craziness cannot be overstated.' Speaking to reporters, Tuchfeld said the court should have thrown out the petitioners who challenged the selection process 'from all the stairs.' He warned that the court's willingness to intervene in a Knesset vote sets a troubling precedent for future parliamentary elections.

Tuchfeld's remarks come hours after the High Court issued a conditional order in response to petitions against the February election of Comptroller Yosef Shapira. The justices proposed that the Knesset voluntarily hold a new vote by Sunday, rather than have the court nullify the result. As The Zioneer reported Thursday afternoon, several coalition lawmakers — including MK Boaz Bismuth — have already condemned the order as an overreach. Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, by contrast, urged the Knesset to comply with the court's recommendation.

There has been no official response from the Knesset leadership to the justices' proposal as of this evening.
