MK Zvi Sukkot, chair of the Knesset Education Committee, issued an open invitation to educational staff in Umm al-Fahm to join a committee tour of schools in the city, scheduled for Sunday June 28. Sukkot said the visit proceeds despite threats and intimidation. The move follows a series of similar school inspections by Sukkot in Arab communities, and comes after local officials resisted an earlier visit.
MK Zvi Sukkot (Religious Zionism), chairman of the Knesset Education Committee, announced an open invitation to educators in Umm al-Fahm to participate in a committee tour of the city's schools on Sunday June 28. In a statement posted Wednesday afternoon, Sukkot said the visit would proceed despite threats and intimidation.
The planned visit follows a series of similar school inspections this month. On June 20, Umm al-Fahm Mayor Samir Subhi convened an emergency meeting after receiving information about the planned visit, which he said was not coordinated with the city. Earlier, on June 11, Sukkot visited the Nur al-Huda school in Shuafat and confronted its principal over alleged Hamas-linked funding. On June 18, he delivered a message in Arabic at a school in Kafr Aqab, warning against what he called "terror education."
Sukkot's announcement escalates a broader campaign by the Education Committee chair to inspect educational institutions in Arab communities over alleged incitement and nationalist content. Local officials in Umm al-Fahm have publicly opposed the visit. The exact itinerary and list of schools to be toured have not yet been published.
