Naamat chair Hagit Pe'ar strongly criticized the Education Committee's approval of a bill allowing gender segregation in academia, calling on the Israeli public to boycott institutions that implement the law if it passes. The legislation, now headed to final Knesset votes, was approved after the committee concluded its votes on reservations.
Naamat (the largest women's organization in Israel) chair Hagit Pe'ar on Monday strongly attacked the Knesset Education Committee's approval of a bill permitting gender segregation in advanced-degree academic programs and in shared campus spaces.
"I believe in the Israeli public that will not allow the implementation of this disgrace. Women and men must vote with their feet and abandon institutions that implement the law if it passes," Pe'ar said, according to N12.
The bill, sponsored by MK Limor Son Har-Melech (Otzma Yehudit), was approved for second and third (final) readings on Monday after the committee voted on reservations, as The Zioneer reported at 12:56. MK Naama Lazimi (The Democrats) was removed from an earlier committee discussion after a commotion broke out.
The legislation now proceeds to the Knesset plenum for final votes.
