Naamat chair Hagit Pe'ar called on the Israeli public to boycott universities that implement the gender segregation bill, after the Knesset Education Committee approved it for final readings. Pe'ar said she trusts the public will not allow the law to be enforced, urging men and women to 'vote with their feet' and abandon institutions that comply.
Naamat chair Hagit Pe'ar on Monday sharply criticized the Knesset Education Committee's approval of a bill allowing gender segregation in academia, calling on the Israeli public to boycott any university that implements the legislation.
"I trust the Israeli public will not allow this disgrace to be implemented," Pe'ar said. "Men and women should vote with their feet and abandon institutions that enforce this law if it passes." The bill, sponsored by MK Limor Son Har-Melech (Otzma Yehudit), was approved for its second and third (final) readings after the committee concluded voting on reservations, as The Zioneer reported.
The legislation would permit gender-segregated studies in advanced-degree programs and in public campus spaces such as libraries, cafeterias, and labs. Pe'ar's call expands on earlier opposition voiced in committee, including MK Naama Lazimi's removal from discussions last week. Opposition figures and legal scholars have argued the bill could entrench separation rather than integration, though supporters say it accommodates religious students' preferences.
