TL;DR

Associates of Prime Minister Netanyahu held talks over the weekend with Knesset Legal Advisor Sagit Afik about advancing a formal Knesset dissolution bill, according to a report from Bar Peleg (N12). The move is driven by concern that the High Court of Justice could rule the current government is a transitional administration, opening the door for a constructive no-confidence vote against Netanyahu during the election campaign.

01 · THE DISPATCH

According to a weekend report by Bar Peleg (N12), associates of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held talks with Knesset Legal Advisor Sagit Afik about advancing a formal bill to dissolve the Knesset. The discussion was prompted by a legal concern that without an explicit dissolution law, the High Court of Justice could classify the current government as a transitional administration. Such a ruling, the report says, would enable a constructive no-confidence vote against Netanyahu during the election campaign — potentially replacing him while the election is already underway.

This weekend meeting follows weeks of coalition maneuvering on the dissolution question. As The Zioneer has reported, most party leaders in the Netanyahu bloc expressed support for dissolving the Knesset as early as the week of June 20. The coalition previously planned to pass a dissolution bill by July 17, amid fears that MKs who switch sides could join the opposition to mount a no-confidence bid close to elections.

The report did not specify whether Afik gave a legal opinion on the proposal or whether a formal bill has been drafted. The Knesset Legal Advisor's office did not comment.
