A suspect attempted to attack police officers on HeHalutz Street in Lod on Wednesday morning, around 10:21 Jerusalem, and was neutralized at the scene. The assailant is reportedly an illegal resident (shovav), according to initial reports. No officers were injured.
This incident is the latest in a series of updates The Zioneer has tracked since 10:06 Jerusalem, when initial reports described a stabbing attack targeting a policewoman. Earlier versions of the story reported that the suspect was in critical condition after being shot by a fellow officer; by 10:06 Jerusalem, the suspect was pronounced dead and identified as an illegal infiltrator from Judea and Samaria. Subsequent dispatches confirmed that the attacker attempted to stab a YSM (Border Police special unit) officer, and that the motive and identity remain under investigation.
As The Zioneer has reported, concerns over illegal infiltrators have been a recurring theme in security incidents. On Monday, police shot and wounded a suspect at a Tel Aviv checkpoint who was later identified as an illegal resident from the Palestinian territories. MK Ofir Katz (Likud) warned on June 9 that "every group of illegal infiltrators may contain a potential terrorist" and called for tougher enforcement.
The identity of the suspect and the exact motive for the attack remain unverified, pending an official police investigation.
