01 · THE DISPATCH

The Jerusalem District Attorney's office is seeking a 22- to 26-year prison term for Nabil Shabani, convicted of the attempted murder of a 74-year-old woman in a nationalist-motivated attack. Prosecutors also requested maximum financial compensation for the victim.

According to the amended indictment, Shabani, who was acquainted with the woman from maintenance work at her home and in her building, carried out the assault after finishing a repair. He strangled her for several minutes, stole jewelry and cash, and returned later to strangle her again and stab her in the neck and chest when he realized she was still alive. The elderly woman was seriously wounded.

The case has drawn attention as a stark instance of nationalist violence against a civilian target. Sentencing arguments are ongoing at the Jerusalem District Court.
