Romanian President Nicusor Dan stated Sunday that an F-16 fighter jet shot down a Shahed-type drone over Romanian territorial waters near Sulina-Chilia at 10:13 this morning. Dan identified the drone as a model used by Russia in its war against Ukraine, and said the drone shot down on Friday morning was also a Shahed. He announced that Romania will file a diplomatic protest against Russia based on the ongoing investigations into the downed drones.
This is the third consecutive day a Romanian fighter jet has intercepted and shot down a drone entering Romanian airspace, as The Zioneer reported earlier Sunday. The defense ministry had reported the Sunday incident earlier without specifying the drone type or location.
Dan condemned the repeated violations of Romanian airspace, which is also NATO and EU airspace, stating that such actions are unacceptable and that Romania is treating them with utmost seriousness alongside its allies. The investigations regarding the drones shot down on Friday and Sunday are continuing.
