The Russian Federation, under the leadership of Vladimir Putin, remains a pivotal actor in the geopolitical landscape affecting Israel. Since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russia's relationship with the West has deteriorated, leading Moscow to deepen its military and strategic ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran. This partnership has manifested in the exchange of advanced weaponry, including Iranian drones used in Ukraine and potential Russian air defense systems for Tehran. For Israel, Russia's presence in Syria necessitates a complex deconfliction mechanism to allow IDF operations against Iranian entrenchment while avoiding direct friction with Russian forces. Recent developments indicate a hardening of Russian rhetoric against Israel, particularly following the escalation of regional conflicts involving Iran's 'Ring of Fire' proxies. Moscow has increasingly positioned itself as a backer of Iranian interests, evidenced by high-level attendance at state ceremonies in Tehran following the elimination of Iranian leaders. Simultaneously, Russia continues its high-intensity war in Ukraine, recently launching some of its largest-ever aerial barrages against Kyiv and other urban centers. These strikes, utilizing combined missile and drone tactics, have resulted in significant civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. European security services have also raised alarms regarding Russian 'shadow fleet' activities, suspecting these vessels of launching surveillance drones over strategic NATO sites. Within Israel, the influence of Russian nationals or passport holders has surfaced in counter-espionage investigations, with recent cases involving individuals allegedly recruited by Iranian intelligence to document sensitive Israeli security sites. As Russia balances its role as a Middle East mediator with its deepening alliance with the IRGC, its actions remain a primary concern for Israeli defense planners.
