US Central Command

US Central Command (CENTCOM) is the unified combatant command of the U.S. Department of Defense responsible for military operations in the Middle East, Central Asia, and parts of South Asia. In June 2026, it transitioned from a posture of regional deterrence to active kinetic engagement against the Iranian regime and its strategic infrastructure.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) serves as the primary operational arm of the United States military in the Middle East. Headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, with a forward headquarters in Qatar, its area of responsibility (AOR) includes the most volatile flashpoints of the 21st century. For Israel, CENTCOM is a critical strategic partner, especially since Israel's transition into the CENTCOM AOR from European Command (EUCOM) in 2021, which facilitated deeper regional integration with Sunni Arab partners.

In June 2026, CENTCOM's role shifted dramatically following a series of Iranian provocations, including the downing of a U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter and drone attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Under the direction of the Trump administration, CENTCOM initiated a wave of "self-defense strikes" targeting Iranian air defense systems, radar sites, and drone storage facilities. Notable operations include precision strikes on the Shahid Raahbar Naval Base near Sirik and the interception of ballistic missiles launched from Iranian territory toward U.S. installations in northern Iraq.

Beyond direct kinetic action, CENTCOM manages the U.S. Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and oversees counter-terrorism efforts in Syria and Iraq. While the command has recently engaged in direct state-level conflict with Iran, it also maintains the "Doha crisis mechanism," a communication channel with the IRGC intended to prevent unintended escalation. As the regional security architecture evolves, CENTCOM remains the linchpin of American power projection and the primary guarantor of maritime security in the Persian Gulf.
