Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar announced Thursday evening that an agreement has been reached to advance the transfer of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's embassy to Jerusalem, with Israel opening an embassy in the DRC capital of Kinshasa in parallel. The DRC is expected to become the 11th country with an embassy in Jerusalem.
Sa'ar's statement follows earlier reports today, first carried by The Zioneer, that the DRC was expected to make the move following a visit by President Félix Tshisekedi. The DRC - Africa's second-largest country, a current member of the UN Security Council and the UN Human Rights Council, and rich in natural resources and minerals - would join Colombia, Nauru, Somaliland, and others that have recently opened or announced embassies in Jerusalem.
Israel's Foreign Ministry did not provide a timeline for the move. The DRC previously maintained a consulate-level diplomatic presence in Israel, not a full embassy in Jerusalem.
