NASA FIRMS satellite data detected fires still burning at two locations near Sulaymaniyah in Iraq's Kurdistan Region, hours after Iranian forces bombed the area on Friday evening. The fires were initially reported as uncontrolled after heavy bombings.
NASA satellite data confirmed early Saturday morning that two fires were still burning near Sulaymaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan, hours after initial reports of heavy bombings by Iranian forces on Friday evening. The confirmation from the FIRMS system comes after The Zioneer reported at 00:32 Jerusalem that widespread fires were burning uncontrolled.
The first reports of explosions in Sulaymaniyah emerged Friday evening. By 17:22 Jerusalem, reports indicated strikes on Iranian opposition headquarters, with Al Jazeera footage showing the target. Later reports described an IRGC strike on a Kurdish base causing secondary explosions, and heavy bombings that left fires raging. In a bulletin at 00:32 Jerusalem, The Zioneer summarized the situation as uncontrolled fires after heavy bombings.
The Zioneer has previously used NASA satellite imagery to confirm fires after attacks, including at Sirik port in Iran following US strikes, and near Isa Air Base in Bahrain after an Iranian missile attack. The region has experienced a pattern of explosions, including blasts in Sulaymaniyah on June 23.
No casualties or damage assessments have been reported. The specific targets of the Iranian strikes remain unverified.
