TL;DR

Slovenia's new government under Prime Minister Janez Janša has revoked the sanctions imposed on Israel by the previous administration. The foreign and defense ministries announced the cancellation of the ban on arms exports and imports with Israel, as well as other punitive measures, which were never actually implemented. The government stated the move restores conditions for proper political dialogue and enhances opportunities for bilateral cooperation in security, innovation, and technology.

01 · THE DISPATCH

The new right-wing Slovenian government, led by Prime Minister Janez Janša, has formally revoked the sanctions imposed on Israel by the previous administration of Robert Golob. The sanctions, adopted in June 2024 under the pretext of alleged violations of international law and humanitarian norms in Gaza and Judea and Samaria, were never enforced in practice, according to the Foreign Ministry in Ljubljana. The canceled measures included a ban on the export and transit of arms and military equipment from or through Slovenia to Israel, and a ban on imports from Israel. The Defense Ministry noted that equipment critical to Slovenia's own security and resilience was exempted from the embargo from the outset.

The Foreign Ministry in Ljubljana said the revocation restores the conditions for proper political dialogue and that, through quiet diplomacy, Slovenia can strengthen its role in efforts for sustainable peace in the Middle East. The ministry also highlighted expanded bilateral cooperation opportunities in innovation, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, water management, sustainable agriculture, health, science, defense, rescue, and economic collaboration.

As The Zioneer previously reported, the Janša government has swiftly moved to reverse the previous administration's hostile posture toward Israel. Earlier this week, it removed the Palestinian flag from the government building in Ljubljana, approved landing rights for Israir flights, and announced the dismissal of an airport manager who had denied an Israeli plane access.
